Beethoven had left the string quartet behind for a dozen years before writing his Op. 127 quartet. He said he had "new kind of part-writing" where all instruments have independent lines while blending together.
Intimate lighting for intimate music. Just a spotlight on the Belcea Quartet is appropriate for Beethoven's late quartets, which are among his most personal, enigmatic and powerfully forward-thinking pieces.

There comes a time in the life of most string quartets when, for better or worse, Beethoven must be confronted. For the acclaimed Belcea Quartet (named after its first violinist Corina Belcea), that time is now. The London-based group, founded at the Royal College of Music in 1994, is thoroughly steeped in Beethoven's 16 string quartets — pieces written throughout the early, middle and late stages of his career in an epic sweep of compositional mastery and imagination.
Now comes the debate over the debates. No matter who "won" or "lost," it's clear that there has been momentum building toward Mitt Romney since he first debated President Obama early this month in Denver. Plus, a look at the competitive Senate races. And the comment by Indiana Republican Richard Mourdock about rape, pregnancy and God has put a GOP Senate seat in jeopardy.

An announcement: The end-of-the-week recap, formerly "Around The Jazz Internet" or "The Friday Link Dump," has a new name. Musicians will know that a "lead sheet" is a melodic sketch with chord changes, a reference guide for when you don't know the tune by heart. Here's what you ought to read from this week:
DeanO’s Pizza in Lafayette began serving a new pizza this past August to its customers, giving it a simple name: Boudin Pizza. Unbeknownst to DeanO’s at the time of its debut, Pastime Restaurant in Baton Rouge created its own Boudin Pizza more than a decade ago, trade-marking the name to protect its uniqueness. DeanO’s was quickly notified of the trademarked pizza name, and decided to solve the situation through Facebook. A contest was held, through the DeanO’s Facebook page, requiring a simple pizza name suggestion.
Republican National Convention delegate Julie Emerson from Carencro and Democratic National Convention delegate Davante Lewis from Lake Charles are intent on ensuring voters that their respective candidates are the best fit for the Oval Office. Emerson, a Mitt Romney supporter, says the country needs a change after four years of President Barack Obama, but Lewis disagrees, saying the best man for the job has already proven that he is more than capable of running the United States.
Could it be that 2012 will be the worst year for West Nile virus? In Louisiana alone, infections are the highest they have been in six years. Reportedly, there have been 176 cases and ten deaths. Most commonly, about 80 percent of those infected will never see any symptoms. 20 percent will have symptoms that are severe flu like, and one percent will find out they have West Nile in a routine blood test. Mosquito abatement programs across the state are working to keep the number of cases down, but some circumstances make that difficult.
