Cheryl Waters

Cheryl Waters hosts The Midday Show on 90.3 FM KEXP Seattle, and online at KEXP.org. As the On-Air Events Coordinator, Waters also books the artists that perform at the KEXP live in-studio performances, live remote broadcasts and KEXP events.

Waters has been a DJ at KEXP since 1994. Her knowledge of and passion for music, both new and old, is evident in her diverse shows. She was the music critic for Seattle NPR station KUOW for more than 10 years. In addition to music, Waters is passionate about books and film.

  • Halstead has gone from making warm, fuzzy, distorted noise in Slowdive to dusty Americana in Mojave 3. Now on his own, he plays music with a stunning yet carefree style. Here, he shares his acoustic sound in a session from KEXP.
  • Telepathique is one heck of a sexy band. For 20 minutes, the Sao Paulo-based group turned the intimate space of a KEXP studio into a late-night dance club. The band's combination of electronic beats and rhythms with thrashing drums and live guitar sounds both unique and familiar.
  • The current political situation sent Firewater's Tod A. around the world to discover more music and culture. The musicians he met inspired him to return home and share what he gained. In an interview and performance from KEXP, Tod A. reveals the fruits of his travels.
  • In a session recorded by KEXP, the inventive art-pop band performed two new songs it's been testing on the road, as well as a few old favorites. Begun as an art-rock solo project for songwriter Sam Simkoff, Le Loup now includes seven members he found online.
  • As a member of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore has influenced tastes, celebrated little-known avant-garde musicians and crafted a prolific career. At KEXP's studio, Moore and violinist Samara Lubelski perform stripped-down songs from his latest solo album, Trees Outside the Academy.
  • After three albums of energetic power-pop, Vancouver band The New Pornographers slows it down with Challengers. The group performs an acoustic set at the KEXP studios and tells host Cheryl Waters how it "flailed" through writing the new album.
  • On Howl, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's members re-imagine themselves as a blues and country band and strip away the guitar noise heard on past records. Hear a performance from the secret Bumbershoot Festival stage, recorded by KEXP with commentary by Cheryl Waters.
  • Grizzly Bear's music is an equally intimate and intense take on indie-folk, complete with ambitious arrangements, unique instrumentation and dreamy, almost choral doo-wop harmonies. Hear an interview with the Brooklyn band, as well as a performance on KEXP in Seattle.
