Legendary country singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver makes his sixth appearance on Mountain Stage. Backed by his own band, Shaver sings a few of his favorites like "Georgia On Fast Train," "Old Chunk of Coal," and the bittersweet "Live Forever," which was co-written with his late son, guitarist Eddy Shaver. He also plays new songs, including the tell-it-like-it-is anthem "The Get Go" and the autobiographical "Wacko from Waco," which addresses the much-publicized shooting incident Shaver was involved in at a Texas saloon in 2007.
The original Honky Tonk Hero, Shaver first came to the attention of music lovers in 1973, when Waylon Jennings filled nearly an entire album with Shaver's songs, kicking off the outlaw country movement. Since then, Shaver has been recognized as one of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century and beyond, releasing 23 albums of his own and having songs covered by Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan.
This performance was originally published on April 9, 2012.
