Mountain Stage

John Gorka performs on Mountain Stage in Grand Marais, Minn., at North House Folk School.

John Gorka makes his 10th appearance on Mountain Stage, recorded on the road in Grand Marais, Minn., on the ground of the North House Folk School. Lauded by Rolling Stone as "the preeminent male singer-songwriter of the new folk movement," John Gorka has written songs covered by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Mary Black, Maura O'Connell and Nanci Griffith.

A mainstay of the folk scene since the mid-1980s, Gorka most recently appeared on Mountain Stage earlier this year as a part of the folk super-trio Red Horse. As always, Gorka balances his rich baritone and introspective songwriting with his trademark dry wit and humor — which is on full display between songs during this Minnesota performance. Mountain Stage band member Michael Lipton's haunting, echo-drenched guitar shines in Gorka's second tune, "I Think of You."
