Tim O'Brien On Mountain Stage
Singer-songwriter and roots musician extraordinaire Tim O'Brien closed the second of two Mountain Stage road shows in Grand Marais, Minn., on the shore of Lake Superior. A favorite of Mountain Stage audiences, crew members, listeners and fellow guest artists for 29 years, O'Brien has long held the record for appearing on the show more than any other performer. A multi-instrumentalist of the highest order, O'Brien sits in with nearly every guest on this episode. For his own set, he digs deep into his latest album Chicken & Egg, including the upbeat (and incredibly appropriate) anthem "Workin'" and the offbeat "Not Afraid O' Dyin'," which was written from the perspective of O'Brien's late father. O'Brien tells the audience that his father, a lawyer who continued to work into his mid-90s, was known for weekly dinner dates with a group of widows, and for such observations as "I've never had bad ham."
This show originally aired November 7, 2011.
