Hurricane Evacuees Adapt to Lafayette Schools

October 7, 2005 – More than three thousand students have enrolled in the Lafayette Parish school system since Hurricane Katrina. Some stayed for only a few days until their families were able to return home. Others are still here. And another wave of students enrolled this week after Hurricane Rita.
At Woodvale Elementary School, more than 70 students are hurricane evacuees: about 10 percent of the school's population.

Lafayette Schools Enroll Rita Evacuees

Oct. 3rd, 2005 – The Lafayette Parish school system began enrolling evacuees from Hurricane Rita on October 3rd, along with some Katrina evacuees who were forced to evacuate a second time. Parents stood in line to fill out forms at the Vermilion Conference Center on Gauthier Rd.

Rita Floods Sugar Cane Fields

Sept. 30, 2005 – Louisiana's annual sugar festival was supposed to have taken place in September. But it was postponed, for the first time anyone can remember since World War II, because of Hurricane Rita. And so was the harvest. Farmers throughout coastal Louisiana are still waiting to see how badly their fields were damaged by the latest storm.
