YouTube Shares Ad Revenue With Musicians, But Does It Add Up?

YouTube is well-known for videos, but a recent Nielsen study revealed 64 percent of teens and young adults go to it to listen to and discover music. The free website, which is owned by Google, has set up advertising deals to help musicians get compensated. But it's not clear how they're getting paid — or how much.

For conservatory-trained jazz musicians, it's a scary job market out there. Saxophonist Dave Liebman, an NEA Jazz Master and veteran statesman, paints a bleak picture:

In the current world of jazz education, the situation vis a vis graduating more and more of the most equipped musicians in history (every year more so) in stark contrast to the scarcity of paid performance and recording opportunities has assumed epic disproportion. To deny this would be like ignoring global warming. Serious educators are and should be concerned.

Clean-Cut 'Moon River' Crooner Andy Williams Dies

The television host and singer who had a hit with his rendition of "Moon River" died last night. Andy Williams was 84. Williams' clean-cut, wholesome image ran counter to many performers of the 1960s and he drew frequent comparisons to Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He also gained popularity hosting the Andy Williams Show and a televised Christmas special. Williams' publicist says he died following a year-long battle with bladder cancer.
